In recent decades, the concept of “new rurality” has emerged as a pivotal topic in discourses concerning the evolving changes of rural regions, with manifestations that may vary depending on the specific geographical area under consideration. The present article aims to analyze these transformations in Japan, characterized by an unprecedented process of depopulation and social ageing, in order to contribute to the discussions on the viability and sustainability of contemporary rural communities. In this sense, the article examines the case of Amacho as a recognized example of rural revitalization, using a methodological approach based on analysis of bibliography, newspapers, and audiovisual materials. The study reveals that, while some of these small municipalities are managing to build new spaces for young people, they are also subject to competition for personnel, which means that the survival of Japanese rural communities remains uncertainDownloads
