A Journey to the North Paci?c: First Institutionalized Novohispanian Enterprise, Cabrillo and Ferrer (1540-1543)

Abstract

Through this work, we contribute to enlargement of the cognitive, maritime and territorial borders in the field of the North New Spain of the sixteenth century. It is one of the contributions in a series that considers land and maritime travel from the North of New Spain. To achieve this we make use of the disciplinary convergence, methodologically use historical tools of primary sources, especially in the case “La Relación”, and interpret them from the theoretical perspective of the sociology of science. The result of the article leads to know some observations of the indigenous population of the region and the development of a sea-crossing that reached up to little beyond the 40 North parallel, as well as the toponymy of Baja and Alta California. As reported in the document, it helped to determine the landforms of the Californian coasts, which ex-panded the geography of the North Pacific.

Licenciatura en Ciencias Sociales, Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, UNAM; maestría y doctorado en historia, Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, UNAM. Investigadora titular “C”, tiempo completo; investigadora nivel III del SNI Actividades docentes en la UNAM desde 1961, actualmente maestra visitantes en la Maestría de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa, sede en Mazatlán. Autora de 65 libros y 101 artículos de investigación publicados por diferentes instituciones mexicanas y extranjeras, principalmente españolas. Autora de varios capítulos en libros. Autora de las Series de investigación: “Los Cirujanos en la Nueva España” con 11 volúmenes publicados y “Los Médicos en la Nueva España y Principios de los Años Independientes de México” con 8 volúmenes publicados. Publicados por el Instituto de Investigaciones Sociales, UNAM en coedición con diferentes instituciones nacionales, entre ellas, la Academia de Cirugía, el Patronato del Hospital de Jesús, la Secretaria de Salud y otras. Autora de numerosos capítulos en libros. Línea de investigación: Perfil de la Ciencia y del Científico en México: Pasado y Presente. Temas actuales de investigación dentro de esa línea: Los científicos y técnicos en la Nueva España, Ampliación de las fronteras geográficas y del conocimiento a través de los viajes marítimos y terrestres al septentrión novohispano.
